Algeria grows more than people realise.
A working guide to Algerian produce, what the country grows, when it is in season, and where the real export quality sits. This is the market understanding behind our trade work.
Beyond oil and gas, Algeria has a large and varied agriculture, fed by the fertile northern plains, the Kabylie hills and the Saharan oases. Fresh dates are now the country's largest export after hydrocarbons, and the government is pushing hard to grow non oil exports across the board. For a buyer, the opportunity is real but specific: a handful of products are genuinely world class and export ready, while others are grown mainly for the domestic market.
What Algeria grows, and how it ranks.
| Product | Where grown | Season | Standing and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dates | Saharan oases, notably Biskra | Harvest October to December, stored year round | World renowned for Deglet Nour. The largest export after oil and gas. |
| Fresh figs | Kabylie and Bejaia | July to September | World's third largest producer. Beni Maouche carries a protected origin label and is chemical free. |
| Olive oil | Kabylie, Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou | New oil November to January | Among the top ten producers globally, about 80,000 tonnes a year, with growing exports. |
| Potatoes | El Oued, Mostaganem, Ain Defla | Spring and autumn crops | Second largest producer in Africa. Meets all domestic demand, with room to export. |
| Tomatoes | Northern plains and the east | Summer | Large fresh crop plus an established processing industry for paste and canning. |
| Citrus | The Mitidja plain | December to April | Oranges, clementines and lemons, mainly for the domestic and regional market. |
| Melons and vegetables | Northern plains and the south | Summer | Watermelons, onions and other vegetables in large volumes. |
When it is at its best.
